what are you guys working on for ss10? custom hardware has really become a focal point of our brand, it is one of the few things that from a material standpoint can ultimately make you unique. for ss10 we created a line of custom metal bands that adorn most of the bags. the bands vary in sizes and design. some have laser engraving script of lyrics and thoughts, others are in the shape of chain, etc.. the result has what we call gypsy - lux .

ss10 collection is the reaction to the action of our fw09 collection. fw09 was an intense focused, forward thinking on-taking. ss10, we looked back, we felt back on each other’s personal nostalgia for inspiration, a time when living was just about being in the moment, traveling was not about reaching a destination…. this is reflected in the finishing of the bags such as our hand tied shoulder straps, raw cut edges and in the individual designs of our custom metal bands; including lyrics and journal thoughts extracted from the past....

tanya aguiñiga (b.1978) is a los angeles based furniture designer/maker raised in tijuana, mexico. tanya’s work is informed by border experiences: the interconnectedness of societies, the beauty in struggle and the celebration of culture. she uses furniture as a way to translate emotions into a three dimensional objects and tell stories trough color and touch. her work encourages users to reconsider the objects they use on a daily basis by creating work that explores an objects’ unseen aspect, such as half chairs that rely on the wall to function and whose image is only complete as its shadow is cast upon the wall.

she has also dedicated much of her time to using art as a vehicle for community empowerment. she has been a member of border art workshop baw/taf, a bi-national artist collaborative for ten years. through baw/taf she helped to build and run a community center in an impoverished area of tijuana built on trash from the united states. for the 6 years she worked there, she focused on bringing national and international attention to the community’s plight through arts only based programs.

in the unites states, she worked on diversifying audiences through arts education at the san diego museum of art and at the rhode island school of design museum through outreach programs. she has also done a great deal of work for migrant rights through art installations across mexico and the united states.

tanya is now working on ways to combine furniture design and community activism. her formal education includes a ba in furniture design from san diego state university and an mfa in furniture design from the rhode island school of design. she was recently awarded a prestigious united states artists fellowship and was named a usa target fellow in the field of crafts and traditional arts. her work has been exhibited from mexico city to milan and included in major international publications such as wallpaper magazine and “pure design, objects of desire” published by monsa editions in spain.

intent.

i intend for my drawings to sit between comic tragedy and cautionary tale. although there are many sources that inform my work--victorian children’s books, buddhist philosophy, movies, satirical writers such as voltaire--it is living in contemporary america that informs my work most.

my drawings reflect current political, economic and social events in a non-direct way—so that the quiet poignancy in an event is what the viewer experiences rather than the specific details. i feel we are missing compassion, gentleness and humor in american culture. when we barrel ahead, unaware of each other and convinced of our invincibility, we set the stage for disaster, and every disaster, private or public, is bittersweet. current life is horrific and sweetly tender. i use watercolor to render the chaos pretty, and to illustrate the naiveté i witness within our cataleptic culture.

i am interested in how banal, disconnected images from multiple sources can be combined to can create layered meanings, and so most of my source imagery comes from the Internet. i think about how technology is playing a role in the tradition of painting and drawing, and how our easy access to global information via the Internet has changed how we experience the world and how we consume and understand images.

currently, i am working on three new bodies of work in my studio: a series of drawings about america’s relationship with china titled made in china; new experiments using folded paper dioramas to create three dimensional drawings; and animated drawings with minimal movement, which are rear-projected onto paper. images of these new works will be on my website in may.
